Paste Paper

This paper decorating technique has been used for book covers and endsheets since the 16th century. A paint and paste mixture is applied to the paper with brushes, then patterned with an assortment of combs, tools, and stamps. We will make a variety of samples that can be used for books, boxes, origami, or as wrapping paper. Historical as well as contemporary patterns will be demonstrated.

Tunnel Book

Create a fun and interactive book with the tunnel book structure. The book consists of layers of paper that lets you create a three dimensional spaces for text and images. Students will make a book using their own text and images. Bring some images to cut up and a sense of play.

Abaca and Inclusions Papermaking

The abaca plant is in the banana family and perfect for creating strong, thin, translucent sheets of paper. In this papermaking workshop participants are encouraged to explore couching items between translucent sheets to create inclusions.

Natural Dyes

Eco-printing is contact printing of plants onto fiber and paper. Participants will learn about plants, fabrics, paper equipment, process, and kirigami building as well as sustainable natural dye process of the southeast and paper bundling techniques in this workshop. Participants will sew/fold/collage and experiment with pre dyed and bundled papers to capture the essence of their favorite endangered flora and fauna. Various natural fibers and types of paper will be used in the workshop that have an affinity for plants dyes and create fantastic prints. We will look at various traditional ways to design using natural dyes, rust, and printing. No experience necessary, just a willingness to experiment and enjoy the bounties of nature.

Mother’s Day is around the corner! Come to the Paper Museum to create a paper masterpiece to give to the mothers or mother-figures in your life. Create paper beads to create necklaces, earrings, or other jewelry and a matching box to wrap it in.
