Program Description:

We are excited to welcome families with children 8 years and older to come for a free cyanotype workshop, with guest artist Courtney Starrett. In this workshop Starrett will bring together art and science by utilizing cyanotypes, an early photographic process that uses sun, or UV light to develop the images. This workshop requires pre-registration and children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the program.

Cyanotype is among the oldest of the photographic processes, invented by Sir John Herschel in the 1840s. These distinct blue prints are created by coating the paper with an iron salt chemistry that reacts to UV light, activating the exposed paper and rinsing off the areas where the light was blocked by some material. Cyan is the Greek word for “dark-blue impression.” Starrett has developed this workshop in collaboration with Susan Reiser.
