Program Description:

Join Trees Atlanta’s Forest Restoration Coordinator Sav Tello and fiber ethnobotanist and Field Botany Program Manager James Ojascastro for a forest restoration program!

Participants will gather at the historic Connally Family Cemetery in East Point to harvest fiber for papermaking. The Connally Family Cemetery is a hidden burial ground established by early settlers more than a century ago. Today, this site is being overtaken by invasive species, including the paper mulberry trees, which displace native species.

During this hands-on restoration project, you’ll help strip the paper mulberry for fiber, and then help remove the invasive paper plants all while learning information about how their bark can be transformed into paper. It’s restoration with a creative twist: protecting native habitat while giving new life to removed trees through traditional papermaking techniques. Note: this day does not include papermaking. For papermaking join the rest of the sessions in the series.

How to Register for this event:

This program is part of a three-part Papermaking Series in partnership with Trees Atlanta.  Registration information coming soon. Please email ebeak@treesatlanta.org for questions or more information.
