Numbers and Letters

Die cut and embossed paper in the shape of numbers and letters. These were originally sold in a stationary store in Eastern Pennsylvania. (ca. 1900)

Decorated Seal

Vibrantly colored embossed foil in the shape of a circle.

Embossed sheet of cotton placed onto a navy-grey hinged box created by Corinna Krause. The cotton was airbrushed with pulp using various shades of green by Marjorie Tomchuck.

Paper Document

This document is a deed granting 300 acres of land in Hampton County Pennsylvania. It was handwritten and typeset onto handmade paper and has an blind embossed seal to authenticate the document.

Paper Folder

Inside of the folder that contains paper samples with different textures and colors.Yellow folder with large white leaf imprints. There is a circle logo in the middle with “Paper Connection International around it in black font.

This folder contains Modern handmade sample paper that was sent by Paper Connection International to encourage their consumer base to purchase paper from their newest collection. The folder has been embossed with large leaf imprints to enhance the design and attract customers.

 

Plates and Tools

This sheet shows the result of the embossing plates. There is a ring of discoloration around the image, presumably from the heat used to emboss.

This is a copper embossing plate, as well as the wax mold (green silicon at the bottom) and the tools used to carve. The plates show a picture of John F. Kennedy’s head and shoulders. One plate has a hole and the other a needle which is used to close the embossers around a material.

Lace Card

(1860-1870) This valentine’s card was made by Johnathon King, who was famous for making this style of card. It was created by embossing and die-cutting methods. Die-cutting is similar to embossing as it uses metal dies to create a design, however instead of imprinting a design it goes through the paper and cuts out a design. The card depicts two women sitting in a boat surrounded by cherubs.
