Program Description:
Join authors and artists Lynn Sures & Michelle Samour as they talk about their new book Radical Paper: Art and Invention with Colored Pulp. Although handmade papers have been used by artists for centuries, the use of colored paper pulp as an integral element in creating art – as opposed to serving only as the surface on which art is created – has seen remarkable development over the last 70 years. As early practitioners like Douglass Morse Howell, Laurence Barker, and Kenneth Tyler mapped out new directions in using colored paper pulp, their work inspired the careers of generations of artists who have taken this medium in fresh and unexpected directions.
This first-of-its-kind book features 245 works by 73 artists in a 440-page hardcover, offset-printed publication by The Legacy Press. Essays, many based on the authors’ interviews with the people who have made their mark in the field, cover a range of topics from history to practitioners to collaborative studios in this revolutionary and little understood medium. Radical Paper: Art and Invention with Colored Pulp introduces and expands the medium to artists, curators, collectors, art historians, and the broader public as it highlights the dynamic scope and inventiveness of today’s leading international practitioners.
