This piece is two separate sheets of paper. The one on the left is rectangular and has a brown, cyan, and mustard marbled pattern. The sheet on the right is slightly larger, and is varying shades of greyish blue and white, resembling a stormy sky.

"[Left sheet] Abaca and corn fibers cast over recycled hand dyed papers and pulp painted.

[Right sheet] Abaca paper with Procion dye

The theme “Blue” resonated with me because of its association with water. A very precious resource, I am conscious that Paper-making does use/waste a lot of water. Some of it I am able to reuse and recycle, but try my utmost to use or waste as little as possible. What are your thoughts on this aspect of paper making?

Blues are not my favorite color palette, warm colors creep into my work almost all the time. So this has also been an interesting aspect of the exchange for me."

This piece is a collage of square blue scraps of fabric with varying patterns placed against a square, black background.

"I love working with indigo, from growing the Japanese indigo plant, to making the dye pot and then drying paper & textiles. Technically indigo is not blue but sits on the color spectrum between blue & violet. But, I’m calling it blue! And did you know that BLUE was the last color named! These are indigo dyed scraps, some with rust dye. The 3 textile pieces are silk, cotton & wool & the remaining papers, all handmade are kozo & kozo lace & abaca. Some of the pieces are dyed using shibori folding."

This piece has a lightly speckled, eggshell blue background with scraps of concert program covers woven into the paper.

"My inner animal is a snail

I used recycled concert program covers from my place of work. I added some sky blue earth pigment and a retention agent a bit of cotton linter. I have several boxes of the concert program covers and I took a couple of the boxes to a shredding company. They charged $5 a box to shred. The paper was thick, and I had too much to shred for a home shredder, that would have taken forever. I like the look of the shredded cardstock, so I wove a piece or two into each sheet."

"This is a mixture of left over fiber combined with flax and abaca. I used a lighter shade of blue on the top for the pulp painting. These were done with a test papermaking mould that was the perfect size for this exchange!"
