About Paper Arts Workshops

These paper arts workshops are suitable public school groups, private school groups, homeschool groups and camps with an interest in exploring papercraft in an engaging and educational way. Book one or a series! Paper Arts workshops may be booked Monday- Friday, 10am - 4pm, depending on educator availability. Programs are suitable for all skill levels. No previous art experience required!

Programs are booked on a first-come, first served basis. Programs are available Tuesday-Friday, 10am - 4pm, depending on instructor availability. Programs booked outside the museum's regular hours may be subject to an additional fee. A non-refundable deposit of 50% of the balance will hold the program date. Payment can be made by cash, check (made out to Georgia Tech), or charge (Visa, MC, Discover, or American Express).

papermaking with a school group

Papermaking

Description: Experience traditional European papermaking! Learn proper papermaking techniques, how to use a mold and deckle, how to press and prepare papers for drying. Each participant will make about 7-10 sheets of cotton paper.

Fee: $15.00 per a student

Printmaking

Printmaking

Description: Create a design on a scratch foam soft printing board and learn to use printmaking tools to create your own one of a kind print! This is a good introductory program to printmaking.

Marbling

Marbling

Description: Interested in the surface decoration of marbling? Then book the Marvelous Marbling program.  Marbled paper is created by suspending dye on the surface of a fluid, and then using tools to create patterns in the ink that are then transferred to paper. In this youth friendly version they will be using shaving cream and food coloring.

Fee: $15.00 per a student

Pamphlet

Description: Basic pamphlet books have 8 pages with decorative covers and a three hole stitch binding. This booklet can be taught as a quarto or octavo booklet, or with additional pages.

Accordion Book

Description: Accordion Books have tag-board covers, wrapped with decorative paper and pages that fold in a zig-zag manner. Pages with pockets and small pop-ups can be added to the book if requested.

Petal Fold Book

Description: The petal fold book technique combines book binding with origami to create a book that blooms, or unfolds at it opens. The book has decorative paper wrapped tag-board covers, 8 origami folded pages with a ribbon binding and closure.

Japanese Stab Binding

Description: The Japanese Stab binding is a traditional binding technique called Yotsume Toji, which translates to “four holes.” Decorative paper wrapped covers enclose the interior folio pages which are bound together through punched holes and stitching

Tunnel Book

Description: The book consists of paper layers forming a “tunnel” with a foreground, mid-ground, and background. Participants will design simple abstract imagery for each layer of the book.

Paper Cuts

Description: Participants will be introduced to the history of Paper Cuts and how cultures all over the world used the delicate cut paper for religious, celebratory and other purposes. Through an instructor demonstration, participants will learn how to make their own paper cut, using paper, cutting tools, and cutting mats. Participants will have the option to design their own paper cut or make one from provided template designs.

Description: What goes better with paper than books? Discover a unique art form and prepare a volume to ll with your own thoughts and words. A variety of different book making programs are available: accordion book, pamphlet, Japanese Stab binding, petal fold book, and single page books.

Quilling

Description: Quilling is a historic paper craft in which strips of paper are twirled, spun, and combined to create beautiful, dimensional works. Learn how to quill with materials you have at home, or with tools and create your own one-of-a-kind artwork. This workshop can be tailored to beginner or more advanced skill levels. Templates can be made available

Pop-Ups

Description: Pop Ups aren’t just for children’s books! Explore paper engineering and learn how to make two-dimensional papers into 3D objects. Cutting, folding, crimping, and rolling are just a few of the techniques to try in this hands-on workshop. Different pop-up styles available for booking

Paper Clay

Description: This workshop merges the sculptural characteristics of clay and the versatility of paper. Participants will learn carving and sculpture techniques to create their own unique design. Sculpture can be themed, clay air dries in a couple days.

Origami

The art of Japanese paper folding, origami, can turn a simple sheet of paper into a stunning creation. 1-2 folds can be chosen. This workshop can be tailored to different skill levels.
