Quilling is a historic paper craft in which strips of paper are twirled, spun, and combined to create beautiful, dimensional works. Wander through the Geormetric Aljamia exhibition and gain inspiration from artwork based on Islamic, Mediterranean and North African geometric patterns. Participants will have the option to design their own quilling template or use one that is provided. All skill levels welcome and all materials provided.

Professors Dr. Natalie Khazaal, Associate Professor in the School of Modern Languages and the Director of the Arabic, Middle East and North Africa programs and Dr. Mohammad Ghomi, Professor in the School of Mathmatics will interpret the concepts from the exhibit Geometric Aljamia: A Cultural Transliteration in their respective fields. Learn a bit more about Middle Eastern culture and the math found in the lovely geometric patterns of Islamic cultures.

Love jewelry and paper? Join us for a bead making workshop and learn to transform a readily available material – paper into delicate art you can wear! Participants will learn basic jewelry techniques to create one-of-a kind bracelets, necklaces, and more using their creations. All skill levels welcome. This workshop is for Georgia Tech Students, Staff, and Faculty. Located in the Price Gilbert Library in the AirSpace room 2222.

Learn how to join paper elements together using a variety of methods to create large paper assemblages. Stitching and adding mixed media are just a few techniques that will be explored.  A variety of paper elements will be available for participants to use to form assemblages. Participants are encouraged to bring paper items with them to use. All skill levels welcome and all materials provided. This workshop is for Georgia Tech Students, Staff, and Faculty. A View Through the Arch: Tunnel Book

Program Description:

Create a fun and interactive book using the tunnel book structure, inspired by the artwork of Jorge Benitez, featured in the special exhibition Geometric Aljamia. Participants will  view the exhibition to spark their creativity and then create a tunnel book influenced by the architectural arches of the Middle East and Mediterranean Basin. The book consists of paper layers forming a “tunnel” with a foreground, mid-ground, and background.

We also learn about Seeds InService: A Papermaking Institute, an ecofeminist, socially-engaged art practice by Maggie Puckett and Melissa Potter that supports self-determining communities through heirloom seed management, thematic gardening, and hand papermaking arts activism.
