Join us for the opening reception for our new changing exhibition A Community of Artists: African American Works on Paper from the Cochran Collection, which showcases fifty noted 20th century American artists. Collected and curated by Wes and Missy Cochran, the Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking chose a selection from the larger collection that not only tells the story of 20th century art in America but highlights the contributions of Georgia’s artists to this larger story.

Join us for this fun workshop where participants will explore an early type of camera less photography. Use paper pre-coated with a mixture of chemicals, the power of the sun and plants to create your own cyanotypes. Participants will also learn about the history of cyanotypes from the technique’s invention, it’s first photographic use, to paper artist who create beautiful pieces of artwork with this technique. A Story Of Forgotten Hanji, Korean Traditional Paper

Dr. Oh-Kyu Lee will share his experience in rediscovering how to make certain types of Korean traditional paper called Hanji. In the past, there were more than two hundreds varieties of Hanji, which varied depending on source materials, size, usage, etc. Only a few of them are still being produced in Korea today. The topic of Dr. Lee’s talk will focus on two types of Korean traditional paper, named Taeji and Siji.

The team behind “This is Not a War Story,” which is currently airing on HBOMax, is working with the paper museum on this joint program. This film is a collaboration with combat veterans affiliated with Frontline Arts who have served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Somalia and elsewhere. These veterans create handmade paper from their military uniforms, utilizing a broad range of visual art media and creative writing to communicate about their military experiences.
